Rain storms can be nice.

The rains came in last weekend and we had a good storm Monday and Tuesday, clearing up for my golf on Wednesday. It started up again on Thursday and continuing in to this weekend. We have a break right now with more coming in late tonight into tomorrow.

We had a good week this week at work. One of the teams was in charge of our Halloween celebration and they borrowed a game from Hollywood Game Night on TV (I hadn't seen it). The game is the passenger gets in the car and the driver asks "Where are you going? The passenger them gives hints like, "It has golden arches and sells hamburgers." The office broke u into two teams and Pete and I were the drivers. It was fun and very creative and the team did a great job on the car. The day of the party I had a conflict, so we moved up the game portion to the morning and I had to miss the potluck lunch which was a taco bar. I had a golf event with Gary at Serrano. I actually would have passed on it, but we were playing with two of our larger insureds, both of which have accounts over $100,000 with us.

We played in a four man event where we used the two lowest scores out of four. We shot a 133 (9 under par) n the money started at 128. One of the guys was a 23 handicap. I shot schizoid as usual and had a 41+46=87. I had a great time with the group and enjoyed hearing about each of their businesses. I enjoyed the day, although I had given blood in the morning at a blood drive at work so had a compression bandage on my left arm that I had to play with.

I am heading to the Sacramento Kings game tonight at the new Golden One Center in downtown Sacramento. Pete and Wendy in the office are splitting season tickets this year and it is Pete's game this weekend. His wife, Vicky, is visiting their daughter in Virginia, who is returning from deployment with her helicopter unit in Bahrain this weekend. Pete and I will meet at Morton's Steakhouse tonight at 5:30 for dinner before the 7:30 game. I wanted to get to the arena early to check out the new space. I'll have pictures and details tomorrow.

I wanted to start on the blog early as I leave for Detroit Tuesday morning and  the Dallas game is on Sunday Night Football this week against the Eagles. I will work on the blog a bit during the games tomorrow.

I had one of those days at work yesterday that I hate. It was all drama. one of the girls is having some problems in her relationship and was emotional all day. Another one was stirring things up with regards to me getting ready to let someone go. I talked to her one an one and told her that the only job on the line was hers and she needed to zip it. The final issue was with someone who was taking excessive sick time and causing issues with her team. I'll deal with that on Monday. Lord, give me strength.

You can see pictures from the IFly event that I attended on Thursday. I was invited to come out to visit the facility and hear about corporate outings at the location. I was also chosen to fly. I probably wouldn't have gone to the event if I wasn't going to fly. Darla came out and met me and took pictures. You spend about thirty minutes with your instructor, watching a video and learning the hand signals that are necessary in the chamber because of the loud buzz of the wind. You have a helmet on, a jump suit, goggles and ear plugs, so have to be able to communicate. I got two sessions of two minutes in the chamber. It doesn't sound like a lot of time, but it is when you are in there. I learned the ropes on the first go and then the instructor took me up about forty feet into the chamber and I had a chance to do some spins. It was fun and I will consider it for the staff, BUT the cost will have to come down. Right now, they want $50 per person and you can get a $39 certificate at Costco. I have 27 people, so good luck with that. I need to go out and work on the yard, so will be back at this tomorrow.

Back at this today. Last night was fun with Pete and the new $560 million stadium in Sacramento for the Kings and other events is spectacular. Pete's tickets are up in the nosebleed seats which gives you a nice view of the entire arena, but is tough for watching basketball. The arena itself is right downtown and built really close to the old bus station and an area that was ripe for renovation. New restaurants have sprung up, there is a new housing development going in within blocks and the downtown area has been revitalized.

Pete and I met at Morton's Steakhouse and had appetizers in the bar area before heading over to the stadium which is only one block over. We had filet mignon sliders and short rib tacos. Pete had an IPA and I had a Stella. We visited for a bit, talking to the bar manager and the General Manager, both of who are friends of Pete and Vicky. Vicky is in Virginia and is visiting with her daughter, who returned today from a Tour of Duty in Bahrain.

I was very impressed with the stadium. They have built it with an inside//outside feel and it has large glass doors that open up to the exterior on nice nights. I was surprised that the doors were not open Saturday night, but rain was in the forecast. In point of fact, the rain did not come in until this morning when we got a good soaking. The facility has both suites and mini suites, but they have built the suites such that the main concourse is open to both the outside and to the arena itself. They've also moved a few of the iconic Sacramento neon signs into the facility itself. There are local restaurants with a presence inside the arena with sushi, pizza, Mexican, steak and Italian represented. Very nice.

I am off to Detroit early Tuesday for our Managers meeting. It is always a long week with meetings starting at 8 AM and running until about 6:00PM, followed by dinner and then a mandatory stint in the hospitality suite. I fly out at 4:30 on Saturday and get back to Sacramento at almost midnight.

Well, this is it for this week. I will be back at the keyboard on Sunday with exciting tales of the annual meeting Have a great week and be nice to each other. Ciao.

Sam and Jennifer in for a wedding

It was actually a very busy weekend. I worked a half day on Friday and we got together with McKenny and Sam for lunch on Friday. Darla was able to meet us at Black Bear Diner for lunch. We had a nice visit with Samantha and McKenny. Jennifer was off to a wine tasting trip with Bill's fiancée up in Newcastle and then an early dinner. Darla was off to a party up in the foothills near Grass Valley and McKenny had some work to do with his job, so they both took off and Sam and I spent an afternoon together. I asked her if she wanted to go to a movie or miniature golfing and she was u for the golf. Golfland was deserted at 1:30 on a Friday afternoon and we had the course to ourselves. They had it dressed up for Halloween and I'm guessing it was a bit more impressive at night. Samantha had a ball and really enjoyed the course. She was hitting the ball a bit hard and it was traveling off the course. She lost her ball about the 14th hole when it headed off the course, rolled downhill by some bushes and into the middle of a pond. We finished the round with just my ball and had to have her hit it and then mark where it was on the course and then I'd go. It was fun and we got a lot of pictures.

Sam got to pick out a little pumpkin and you can see it with her as she is playing in the arcade. I got a ten dollar card and she rode about eight of the rides and we played skee ball and she ended up with enough tickets to get a small ball and a candy necklace. We were going to ride the go carts, but they didn't open until 3:30 and Sam decided she'd rather go get an ice cream at Dairy Queen than wait. We got our Blizzards and  smoothie and as we were sitting talking she said, "I really want to go to your house, Papa," I asked her why and she said she wanted to go to the park across the street. I told her we had to get back to Folsom as Bill wanted to spend the evening with her and take her and McKenny and his fiancĂ©'s son to dinner. She really wanted to go to the park and we do that together a lot, so I took her to Royer Park across the street from the DQ. You can see the pictures of her on the swings at the park. I finally rounded her up and got her back in the car and off to Bill's.

Bill has a great house in Folsom with a single story 2200 square foot house on a half acre property with a 600 square foot "Mother in law's" quarters at the top of the property. Jennifer and McKenny were staying there and the little house has a common area with couch and two desks as well as a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. The house is self contained with it's own hot water heater. Very nice.

We did not get to see Jennifer as they were busy Saturday with the wedding, so we will have to just look forward to next month.

I stopped back in the office on the way back and ended up working for about two hours and then headed over to poker at John's house here in Roseville. I lost early, won late and made about $30 on the night. John fixed shish-k-bobs and we really had a great night. I usually bring a little flask of rye and some ginger ale, but instead brought a bottle of Shiraz from Lodi that was pretty good.

Saturday was a sleep in day. I've been really tired at work lately and needed a down day. I did some work out on the lawn and pool and relaxed most of the day. We had dinner with the IBA group that hosted the National Junior golf event back in August. Tabb put on the party at his house in Woodland and he served tri tip and halibut that he caught in Alaska back in September (the halibut, NOT the tri tip). He had a new barbecue and beer tap put in and this was the maiden voyage for the setup. The barbecue is really nice in that it has a sink next to it, the beer kegger and the island is set up with six bar stools and a granite counter top to eat at. We had a ball and enjoyed reliving the tournament with all of the volunteer committee. Pete and Vicky were along although he wasn't on the committee. We had invited Pete and Vicky to go with us to an event at Raley Field that we were invited to as part of our season tickets. When I got the invite I explained that to Tabb. He and Pete are close friends and he insisted that we bring them along.

I was ready for bed, but Darla asked e if we could stop at a bar on the way home as the daughter of one of her Touchstone representatives was playing with her band. It is the Corner Pocket in Citrus Heights and a little local hole in the wall. The place was packed. and Jennifer, who is the singer, is quite an entertainer. Lots of energy and a really good voice. We stayed until about 11:00 when the first break came for the band and then shuffled off to home.

I played golf today in the Past President's event and there were 11 Past Presidents playing. We had a separate $100 skin competition and I had a birdie on number 8 that won $16 and another $24 in my flight for $40. I shot 41 on the front side, but limped home with a double bogey on number 9, which was a harbinger of my back nine. I shot 46 for an 87, net 73. I'll win 5th place in my flight, but it could have been so much better. I was in the first group out and stayed until the end and handled the skin money for everyone. We had over $360 in skin money over four flights. There was no Dallas football today as they are on bye so i could help out.

Well, that is it. You can see the pictures from the wedding where Sam was both flower girl and ring bearer. Jennifer said she did great and she is definitely growing up. When McKenny and Sam came to me office, Sam went with me and met each of my employees. In the past she was shy and would hide behind me, but this trip she stood and talked to each person and I was very proud of her. She asked me afterward if I was in charge of the whole office building. Cute kid. We had a blast and look forward to our trip to Vegas over Thanksgiving. That is it for this week. Have a great week and I'll be back at it in a week's time. We are due for a lot of rain this week and I'm supposed to play golf Wednesday and again on Saturday. Be well. Ciao.

First good rainstorm of Fall 2016

The rains have come to Northern California and although it is not a Biblical event, we have had about 3 inches out of this storm since Friday. I had to drain out about six inches of water out of the pool to bring it down to the mid tile level. I just finished up doing some handicapping for next weekend's Past President event. It was a lazy day today as we went to church last night and slept in this morning, waking to the rain slowly beating on the roof and on the patio outside our bedroom door. I watched a little bit of the Niner game this morning to see the reception for Kaepernick by the Buffalo fans. They booed lustily and he had one of his average games with less than 50% completions and 66 yards rushing, 187 yards passing and one TD. I don't know what the fans were expecting as this is the same quarterback they booed off the field last year, only about thirty pounds less because he is a vegan professional athlete. He's shocked that he can't gain weight. Mix in a hamburger, you moron. I then watched the maturing and sometimes spectacular Dallas Cowboys dominate the Green Bay Packers in Green Bay. It was a perfect Fall day with blue skies and great field conditions in Green Bay. Dak and Zeke might struggle in bad weather (that remains to be seen), but they can play. It's fun to watch this year. They are on Bye next week, but will return in two weeks in a Sunday night game against the Eagles.

Wednesday afternoon I took the staff out to the new Top Golf facility in Roseville. We do quarterly team building events and have done bowling, Happy Hour and Game night in the past. This one was a hit and I wasn't sure if the non golfers would enjoy it, but everyone had a great time. We had appetizers and some donut holes with syringes full of Bavarian Cream, chocolate and raspberry jelly. It was a gustatory delight. I enjoyed myself, but it wasn't typical practice in that I was using their equipment and the farthest target is 210 yards away. It was interesting to see some of the lack of athleticism that exists in my office and then there were a couple that were very good that surprised me. We were there from 3 PM until bout 5:30 PM. We will go again.

Our month is going well. The comparison on this month is huge as it was our largest single month in 2015. We wrote $411,000 in income in October last year and over $2.7 million in premium. Our goal this month is $3,000,000 premium and $450,000 in income. So far we are on track to hit our goals. The staff surprised me on Friday with a card and restaurant gift card for Bosses Day, which is today. I was surprised at some of the comments. I suppose they aren't going to write "You suck" or something, but there were some great comments. The ones I like the best are from the real young staff. One who is 22 wrote "You are the Best Boss I've ever had!!" Very nice that I beat the shift manager at Carl's Jr. and the manager at the car wash. Something tells me that they likely didn't have Team Building events there. Nice though. They bought me a $125 card to a local fine dining restaurant that Darla and I enjoy.

I played golf yesterday and the course was wet, but the day was dry. The storm rolled in on Friday and we got a good drenching that ended about 6:30 Friday night. It was clear overnight and I had one of my foursome bail, but Bryan, Paul and I showed up and played. I shot 84 on the day and played particularly well on the back nine, shooting 41. Paul was late as always and we had to wait on him. The group behind us jumped the tee and we got stuck behind a foursome of occasional golfers. We enjoyed ourselves and the pace was pretty good. We did hit into them on the 16th hole when they were on the right side looking for balls and we thought they were gone. Bryan hits the ball long anyhow and is one of the 300 yard bombers in the club. We all hit right down the middle on that hole and had shots at getting to the par 5 in two. As we were waiting to hit our second shots one of the guys came up on his cart and lit into us for hitting into them. I apologized and told him we didn't see them. He seemed okay with that, but Bryan couldn't keep his mouth shut and started in on the guy for being so slow and having two holes open in front of them and jumping the tee on the first hole. The two of them were jawing like a baseball manager and an umpire. They were done talking and the guy was riding back and Bryan yelled at him for wasting our time driving all the way back to complain. Bryan is 40 years old and still a hot head. I ribbed him about making such a big deal out of nothing.

I had lunch with the guys afterward and then took my car over to get a car wash. I bought a Wen Orbital car polisher and wanted to apply some McGuire's rubbing compound to the surface to remove any small scratches and then put on a coat of car polish. The car was gleaming when I got done. I pulled the car straight into the garage and came in to shower for church. We took Darla's Explorer to church and left my clean machine in the garage. When we left I noticed that the garage door stayed about 4 inches from completely closing. We were late so took off. The rain came in hard as we sat in service. We got home and the garage door wouldn't open. It seemed to move, but not open. I went through the house and could see that the door was hung up on the back of my car. The 300 must have rolled back after I parked it and the roll up door caught on the bumper. I pulled the car up and the door fell off of the bumper and would open. The back of the car had scratches on the bumper and I pulled out the rubbing compound and the orbital waxer and went to work. I checked it today and used a bit of touch up paint. I rubbed out the extra paint and re-waxed the bumper and it looks okay. Timing is sometimes cruel.

Darla and I have planned a trip to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving. We fly in on Tuesday night and stay until Saturday night to spend Thanksgiving with Jennifer, Sam and McKenny. We will stay at the Aliante Tuesday and Wednesday and then move over to Jennifer's on Thanksgiving night. We will celebrate Sam's birthday while we are there. Her birthday is December 21st, but we will celebrate with her. Looking forward to it.

Jennifer, McKenny and Sam will be in town next weekend as Diane's second husband, Bill, is getting married and Sam will be in the wedding. I'm not sure how much we will see them, but this is Bill's event and we will be there to see them in a couple of weeks.

Well, that is it for this week. The rain is winding down and we are supposed to have nice weather most of the week in the low seventies and upper sixties. Nice; Looking forward to it. I hope you are all doing well and living in the footsteps of our Savior. Ciao.

Indian Summer

Siting in the 93 degree heat on October 9th finishing up the afternoon football. Dallas and their amazing rookies won again to go 4-1. Zeke and Dak both played well and will make it interesting when Tony Romo is healthy. Jerry says Tony will start and he probably should, but Dak is playing so well that it leaves that decision open to criticism. As other sports announcers have said, it is a good problem to have and one that was so needed last year when Tony got hurt.

Things are going well at work. I've been doing a little more marketing with some of the younger producers and got out this week with Wendy to Gary Anderson's office. Gary wanted to change underwriters and I brought Wendy in to meet his staff and then Gary wanted to go get a glass of wine at a restaurant near his office afterward. Wendy had to get home to her baby, so I took one for the team. Gary was telling me he had a Scotty Cameron putter that he won and wanted to sell. I have a Scotty and love it. They go for $400 and he wanted $100. for it. It is a mallet style putter and too heavy for me. I asked John if he'd be interested and sold it to him right away.

I took Pete, Ron and John to golf at Serrano on Wednesday afternoon. I had won a gift certificate and John had subbed for Ron and I in the twilight league and I promised him a chance t play Serrano, which he had never done. He picked me up at the office and we were about five miles from the course when I remembered that I had left the gift card I my car back in our parking lot. I called the course and asked if I could show them a picture of the certificate and they said Yes. Thank God or we would have had to turn around and drive back. We hit balls and then had a nice lunch at the patio grill which John was nice enough to buy. I played well on the difficult course and shot 88, which seems to be my number lately. John had some back issues and struggled. Ron shot low 90's and Pete shot in the 100s. We had a really good time together and the weather was perfect (about 75 degrees).

I played this weekend and planned a trip to Rio Vista with Paul Gonzalez for his birthday. He turned 62 on Thursday and I had a Golf Moose certificate for two rounds with cart at Rio Vista. Rio Vista is on the Delta about 20 miles east of Lodi and about an hour and fifteen minute ride from Roseville. We ended up just playing as a twosome as our club is in Monterey this weekend. The course is much like Discovery Bay in that it is part of a designed community in a gated community. The course went into disrepair over the last several years and was bought by Warrior Golf. Warrior is the golf design company that offers free golf clubs and they feel that if you try out one of their clubs, you will buy a whole set. I've hit the clubs and (frankly) they are CRAP. The company started buying and managing golf courses six years ago and now have about 20 golf courses throughout the US, including 4 in California, four in Texas, 4 in Florida and several in North Carolina and other eastern cities. They have an interesting acquisition strategy in that all of the clubs that they buy are in the $1 million to $5 million price point and all of the courses are bought as LLC's with private investors that pool their money to buy the courses with no lending institutions involved. Warrior Golf then provides the management and upkeep of the courses. It is a work in progress at Rio Vista as the course had=s great greens, but the fairways, tee boxes and sand traps need work. I shot 44 on the front side and was up and down. Unfortunately, the course is really wet from over watering and I took a fall on the fourth tee box, which is a raised tee box. I was walking down the side of the box and my feet went right out from under me and landed on my right side. It jarred me pretty good and I'm sorer today than yesterday. My right shoulder is really sore and I have a physical on Tuesday morning and will have my doctor look at my shoulder then. Hopefully I don't have a dislocated shoulder, but if I do, he should be able to pop it back in then. Strangely, I played much better after the fall and was actually 1 under after four holes on the back nine before going six over on the final five holes for a 41 and 85 for the day. At least it wasn't 88/ I blame Paul for my bad finish as we passed two groups and were on the 15th hole when he decided that he had t run back two holes to the restroom. What? I told him to just go in the bushes, but he had to pinch a loaf. We drove back and then had to skip the 6th hole and play in on 16-18. We took bogeys on 15, even though I was on the edge of the green on a par three. Paul.

Darla's business is going well and she has many parties lined up in the coming weeks. She has the largest team in California for Touchstone and has set sales records every month for the company. I'm proud of her and look forward to her next two promotions, whereby she will get a BMW.

Darla and I have decided to leave AT&T for our cell service and try out Sprint. We are both getting new iphone 7s and our bill will drop from $169 to $100. I get $100 a month from my company for my cell service so it works out from that standpoint. We'll see how the service stacks up and will have 30 days to switch back if we don't like it. In the meantime, they will pay off Darla's phone service with AT&T and pay us to switch.

We had a great service today at church and we are working in the book of Philippines and studying Paul and his incarceration. He continued to be a champion for Christianity and even turned several of the Palace guards in Rome to the Lord. There was a quote from George Bernard Shaw referenced that reads: "I learned long ago not to wrestle pigs in the mud. You get awfully dirty and the pig loves it." Another nugget from service.

I also included a picture of Miya, David's girlfriend, from a dinner that they attended last night. He waited a while to date seriously, but ended up with a gem. She is an Endocrinologist and a beautiful soul. He's a lucky guy.

The Presidential debates are starting and I need to sign off until next week. I hope everyone is great and living a fulfilling life. I love you all. Ciao.

Rain and Hail Today

Wow. It was a good day to be indoors watching football. There was a chance of rain this afternoon with snow up in the mountains above 6000 feet. Darla is off to Lodi for the annual Lodi Street Fair and a booth for her Touchstone jewelry. She was up and out of the house before 6 this morning. I had planned to go to church, but motivation to go and sit alone wasn't high this morning. I got up and showered and then headed out to the store to pick up some eggs and milk and then stopped by the hardware store and got some more seed for the lawn. The grass is coming in nice, but I think the hot weather that rolled in after I sowed the seed slowed the germination. I sowed that seed as an over seed on the entire lawn and then put down some more starter fertilizer. I did some handicapping for next weekend's Monterey away event. Darla and I are not attending this year as we've had some expenses this Fall that have added up and the Monterey trip with food, golf, housing and Darla's shopping usually adds up to a $1000 weekend. The repair on the Explorer ended up costing us over $1600 when all was said and done. We have a Hawaii trip coming up and still want to get to Vegas soon. Anyhow, the rain came in about 3:00 PM with heavy rain, wind and hail. I had to run out and put all six umbrellas in the backyard down before the wind took them airborne. The heavy rain likely helped push some of the seed deeper into the turf. Here are pictures of the transfer case that was replaced in the Explorer:

By the way, it's not supposed to look like that. The fluid looks to have been boiled or something.

I had a full week with work, a road trip to Napa on Friday for golf and another golf game Saturday. Darla and I went out and saw the movie, Sully last night at the Studio Movie Grill in Rocklin. I was impressed with the facility, the intimacy of the theater itself, and (surprisingly) the food. I had a chicken macaroni and cheese dish and Darla had a steak sandwich. Both entrees were excellent. We also had some theater popcorn and a couple of drinks. The service was excellent and they were right there as soon as you hit your service button. I would go back. It was a great experience and the movie was awesome. You can't go wrong with Ton Hanks starring in a movie.

I got together with Bob Pando, John and Neil on Friday in Napa. The weather was incredible, about 72 degrees and sunny...well, once the marine layer burned off. I had planned to leave from my house at 6:30 for our 8:52 tee time in Napa. John panicked and thought we were cutting it too short. It takes about and hour and ten minutes with no traffic. I planned about 90 minutes, it being a Friday. John wanted to leave at 6 AM and we compromised at 6:15. We breezed through traffic and were in Fairfield by 7 AM. We stopped at Panera bread and had breakfast, arriving in Napa about 8:15 after relaxing with coffee and iced tea for me. The marine layer moved in and the temperature dropped to 49 degrees. John was driving and we were both in shorts. He wanted to know if I saw snowflakes. It was a fun day and I shot 88 after struggling to a 98 the first time I played the course. It was a great visit with Bob, who drove down from San Jose to meet us.

I got a text on the way home from golf from Darla that Daniel had asked for a ride over to his brother's work place after 5. She had a party and asked if I could help out. I got home about 4:30 and went over to pick up Dan at his Dad's house. Dan is in Roseville one week a month and works out of the Psomas Roseville office and stays with his Dad. David was driving to San Francisco to attend a Blue Grass festival ( I think the beard has really affected him). He drove Daniel back to San Francisco where Dan took a Bart train back to San Jose. They all met up at the Blue Grass festival at Golden Gate Park yesterday. I took a picture of the boys at David's office and you can see he has trimmed his beard and looks handsome again.

Saturday I played over at Cherry Island with Ron, Rico and Paul. I shot another 88, which seems to be my number lately much like 83 used to be, I really need to take a lesson on chipping as I've really lost my ability to nip the ball and get it to hit and spin on the green. We had a good day and I even won some money in skins. We had a nice lunch while watching the Ryder Cup Saturday 4 ball matches. I got home and mowed the lawn and cleaned the backyard and pool. That was a waste of time after the storm today. I did repair the hose on the pool sweep, which had a cut in the hose and wasn't operating optimally.

Darla is home from her event. She said it was a bit slow, although the weather there was much better than here. She came home with two bags of kettle corn and a cross with live plants. I guess she about broke even after her purchases. Here is a picture of the cross she bought:

There have been so many good TV programs that have been canceled in the last few years (The Good Wife, Parenthood, Mad Men, The Newsroom, Rookie Blue, etc), We've been looking at some of the new shows. So far we like Designated Survivor and This is Us, We really don't like The Good Place, on NBC which has been the most watched show this season. It is horrible, a weak plot and embarrassing acting. Stay away. We started watching the Voice this year and enjoy Blake Shelton and Adam Levine. It was not one we watched, but we did enjoy the X Factor and American Idol, so gave it a try and really enjoy it.

That is it for this week. I have a golf game (sports marketing) on Wednesday at Serrano Country Club in El Dorado Hills. I will also play the course  at Rio Vista next Saturday. It is Paul's birthday and I told him that I would treat him to golf. Have a great week. I was out Friday, but I think we missed our goal at work this month, although surpassed 2015. Ciao.
